A Big Week

In the last week we've been doing a lot to finish getting ready for blast off.

I rode 20 miles in the rain last Sunday to practice and see what might be lacking.  My hands got cold and my shoes filled up with water.  So, I was pretty miserable after about an hour of steady downpour.  Found out that I should wear an extra pair of gloves.  Somebody told me that cheap shower caps with elastic would stay on your shoes and keep them dry if you don't clip in.  So I'm grabbing some shower caps.

We went to REI and spent our wedding money on new rainjackets.  They're pretty high-tech with every flap, vent, pocket, reflectors, zip-off sleeves for when it stops raining, etc.  Went to WalMart for some inexpensive sports jerseys, socks, and M&Ms.  Got some bike locks at Sports Authority.

Also attended a bike maintenance course at REI.  Learned some new vocabulary and got some good resources.  They showed us how to clean chains and fix flat tires and tighten spokes.

Peter got me a rear-view mirror and I think I've gotten the hang of using it.

Don & Jeannette have their plane reservations for May 7th to 17th, Albuquerque to Dalhart, TX.  We're  setting up reservations for some of the other drivers, and are still having trouble getting a driver for June 1 through the 12th.  It's the Branson, MO to Bowling Green, KY leg.

Peter had his bike repaired this week and then he cleaned them both.  He's set up pack bags for each of our bikes to carry emergency gear and lunch.  I have a cool dual water bottle cage that sits under my seat like a rocket pack.

We set up our tent and air mattress to make sure it all works.  The cat promptly went inside and rolled around and took a quick nap.

Got the oil changed and 2 new tires for the 4 Runner so it's ready to drive to Whittier when we pick up the camper next week.

Trying to make sure everything at home is squared away for us to be gone for three months!
